Warring for Your Marriage: Fighting from Your Knees

Devotion:

Scripture:
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”Exodus 14:14 (NIV)

Marriage is not just a union between two people—it’s a covenant before God. And like any covenant, it will face pressure from the enemy, from the world, and sometimes even from our own weaknesses. When conflict arises, or when love grows cold, it’s easy to think the battle is against your spouse. But the real fight is spiritual.

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood”—your husband or wife is not your enemy. The enemy is the one who wants to sow division, offense, pride, and bitterness. That’s why we must learn to war for our marriages, not in anger or manipulation, but in prayer, humility, and love.

To war for your marriage means to stand in the gap—to pray when you don’t feel like it, to forgive when it’s hard, and to choose covenant over convenience. It means speaking life when death tries to creep in. It’s declaring God’s promises over your home and refusing to let the enemy write your story.

When you take your battles to God, He becomes your defender. He softens hearts, restores intimacy, and rekindles love that seemed lost. Your job is to stay on your knees and keep your heart aligned with His Word.

Remember: the same God who brought you together is able to hold you together.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what areas of your marriage do you sense the most spiritual resistance?
  2. How can you shift from fighting your spouse to fighting for your spouse?
  3. What promises from God’s Word can you declare over your marriage this week?

Prayer:

Lord, teach us to war for our marriage the right way. Help us to see each other not as opponents, but as partners in Your purpose. Give us wisdom to pray, strength to forgive, and faith to believe that You are restoring what the enemy has tried to steal. Let our marriage reflect Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
